New Lamp
The New Museum recently opened with much fanfare on Bowery in Manhattan. During its construction, images of the building glowing a nice soft white were floating around on the web. When the museum finally opened, one of the most noticeable differences, besides the lame "Hell, Yes!" rainbow sign adorning the front of the building, was the dearth of light coming from it at night. At first, it was thought that money-saving measures - such as turning off the lights at night - were being implemented because of expected low attendance due to subpar exhibits, but upon closer inspection, it turned out that the museum only had a few windows through which light could escape.
With all due respect to the building and its architects and construction workers and investors and contributors, the renderings looked a bit nicer than the actual building in my opinion. As a side project, I decided to make a scaled-down version that actually glowed at night. The result was a nice-looking (thanks to SANAA) table lamp (the beautiful cups in the pictures below, which SANAA may or may not have gotten their inspiration from, are the work of designer Mihoko Ouchi). With luck, I'll be able to produce enough of these for those light-loving but disappointed fans of the New Museum.
